The Top 5 Technology Tips That College Freshman Must Know

The first year of college is where you enter into adult life of independence and being responsible and accountable. Among the many things that you will be taking care of, there are some important issues concerning the use of technology in the dorm rooms that would make your life easier.

1. Phishing Scams
According to UC Berkeley, phishing is an ongoing threat to the Campus. “Phishing is potentially one of the most damaging internet security issues to our college students.” By definition, phishing is a scam by which an e-mail user is duped into revealing personal or confidential account information which can be used illicitly by the scammer. Usually the phishing e-mail will consist of a link to a fake web site that looks identical to the real web site of financial institutions or forged university accounts.

Steps to follow to prevent personal data being 'phished':
• Be vigilant and cautious. Never give out personal information or passwords through email.
• Keep your antivirus software and firewall up to date.
• Check the email address to see if it does match the email address of the organization.
• Do not click at the link to go to the organization's web site. Open a new web browser and type in the web address yourself.
• Do not click on links in an email you believe to be fraudulent-it could be a link to a malware software auto-download.
• Check the security certificate of any website into which you are entering sensitive data. They should usually begin with 'https: //'. Some browsers will display padlock symbols in the address and status bars. Anything on a website saying it is safe can be falsified and is not verified by the browser you are using, and so should not be trusted.
• Check with the internet security department of your college to see the kind of recent scams being reported or the advice provided. For example, UC Berkeley posted important information at their site: .

2. Electronic appliances and accessories to bring to the dorm
Beside the obvious items: laptop, smart phone, alarm clock and chargers, have you thought of these electronic appliances and accessories to bring to college?
• Noise-cancelling headphones
• Extension cords and cable ties
• Airprint inkjet or laser printer
• Replacement printer ink or laser toner cartridges
Shelf life of unopened ink or laser toner cartridges can be expected to be about 1 year. Compatible or remanufactured printer ink or laser toner cartridges provide cost savings of up to 80% as compared to OEM The best thing is that you can order online and have them delivered to your college mailing address.
• Back up hard-drive
• E-reader or tablet
More and more textbooks are made available in electronic versions. You may want to invest in an e-reader or tablet that enables you to carry your textbooks around campus easily and study on the go.

3. A wireless set up in the dorm room
Image freshmen usually stay in double or triple rooms where space and internet ports are limited. This requires smart organization. Given the number of devices that may need wifi connection, a wireless router is essential. Search the student forum to find out how the current students are setting up the wireless connection.

You will need a working, always-on, broadband internet access with a DSL or cable modem. You will also need a wireless, broadband router with built-in firewall. Then, set up your personal wifi network. Usually it will be a simple “One Step Setup” process explained in the manual.

4. How to find my lost phone or tablet?
This is something to think about before your phone, notebook or tablet is being stolen. iPhone and Android phones provide apps to track your device. Be sure to set up the apps. For Android phones, free apps like 'Lookout' or 'Avast!' can help you locate, remote lock and remote wipe your phone. Apple offers 'Find My iPhone' app to locate lost iPhone, MacBook, iPod Touch or iPad. There are good suggestions from this forum: .

5. Cloud storage.
Cloud storage means cyber storage of your media and document files and it is an effective data back-up methodology. An internet hosting service is needed and it allows users to upload files that could then be accessed over the internet from a different computer, tablet, smart phone or networked device, by the same user or possibly by other users, after a password or other authentication is provided. Cloud storage can be expensive. However, there are some free and limited cloud storage services to tap into. To name a few, CNET, Dropbox, Google Drive, SkyDrive and Evernote all provide free and limited space cloud storage services.

Tips To Speed Up A Lagging PC

One of the most annoying things about a computer is its tendency to slow down after a while. This can be a huge drain on productivity – especially if you're waiting for programs to load, close, the computer to boot up, or the computer to restart. I know what it's like to have a computer take almost 10 minutes to completely boot up! This is unacceptable in this day in age.

So what is the main cause of a computer's lagging speed? Typically the problem falls into a few different categories. The first cause is when there is a lot of extra software on the PC. This can be a huge drain on system resources, especially programs that have not been coded very well. They can drastically reduce system performance – and sometimes you do not even know they are running in the background!

So the first step in improving your computer's performance is to take a look in the Add / Remove Software section of the Control Panel. This is where you can see if there are any extra software programs that might have snuck their way onto your computer. One of the most annoying things these days (and it's becoming a trend) is to have “bundled” software install itself with another program you've downloaded. One example is the case where McAfee tries to install an antivirus software tool along with Adobe Flash. Every time I want to update Flash, I have to ensure that I de-select the McAfee option. Otherwise I'll end up installing a program I never intended to – and this is a program that will run in the background and hog resources. If you get enough of these programs on your system, the computer will definitely slow down.

Another thing that you can do to drastically improve system performance is to add additional RAM. RAM is a physical measure of how much your computer can do at once. If you go to Crucial's website they have an automatic system to determine exactly what type of RAM your computer can take (making it much easier for the average person to get and install RAM on their own). I did this with two computers; it was a breeze, and made my computers run so much faster.

One more common reason that a computer will slow down is simply the fact that the hard drive is full or close to full. This can happen more quickly than you think these days thanks to the large size of video and music files, and the ease at which internet speeds enable you to instantly download them. The best option in this case is to put these files on an external hard drive. If the hard disk that the Windows operating system is on is full or nearly full, the system will have a very hard time running efficiently. One rule of thumb I heard was the keep the OS hard drive half full at all times.

Modern Computer Concerns

When Is Malware Removal Required?

Malware attack is fast becoming the order of the day. Your computer can easily get infected by a dangerous malware at any time. There are hundreds of malware threats and viruses scattered all over the internet. They are regularly created and distributed by several cyber criminals who are always looking for gullible computer users to dupe. If you're not careful when browsing the Internet, you can easily be attacked by a malware. You can pick it up when you visit malicious websites. You can also be attacked when you open suspicious links in spam mails. It's important you know when malware removal is due for your computer.

Signs of Malware Infection

To discover when malware removal is highly required for your system, you have to watch out for possible signs. Your computer is under malware attack when:

· You start seeing all kinds of pop-ups on your browser.
· You start seeing all kinds of browser errors as you try to visit some websites.
· Your browser begins to freeze or hang on regular basis
· The default browser homepage is modified.
· Your access to certain security website is completely blocked.
· You start getting redirected to other websites you do not intend to visit.
· You start seeing all kinds of strange toolbars on your browser.
· Some of the normal computer programs start hanging or freezing up.
· Your computer boots up slowly
· The overall system performance is poor
· You start seeing new desktop icons which you did not authorize
· Your computer restarts without your consent
· You start seeing constant error messages while using your computer
· The system's anti-virus fails to open as before
· Other normal computer programs fail to open
· You can not access Task Manager and Control panel anymore

When you start noticing any of these conditions above above, you have to bear in mind that your system has been compromised by a dangerous malware, spyware or virus. Your system's programs, folders, files and documents can easily be corrupted if you fail to take any action. The system can also crash if the threat persists.

You can always help your system by engaging the right malware removal method. You can download and install a reliable anti-malware program from a good source. You can use such a program to scan your computer and get the malware removed. You can always engage a reliable computer technician to help you out if you can not handle the situation.

How To Publish A Magazine On ‘Newsstand’

The iPad Publishing Platform, or more commonly known as the Newsstand appears on every single Apple device right there on the homescreen.

I'm sure you've seen it. You probably have downloaded multiple magazines that interest you.

It was not always this way though. Originally when smart devices came out Magazine Publishers took a huge hit. Sales declined because people were no longer purchasing and reading magazines anymore.

Consumers now had a new outlet to get their news: their smart device.

Only until recently magazine publishers had no outlet to tap into this growing base of customers. But, as you are probably aware of Apple now has the “Newsstand” on the home page of every single smart device including iPhone, iPad, and iTouch.

So that evokes the question of how you can tap into this many buyers and take advantage of all the functionality that the newsstand allows.

But first, what is a magcast?

Well, it's simple really. A magcast allows you to publish content directly to your customers, subscribers, or clients by way of a “written podcast”.

That's right! Magcasts offer all the functionality of a website so you can host videos, mp3s or text based content in it. Magcasts were created to allow businesses, organizations, and individuals alike to take advantage of Apple's new media publishing platform they've called 'Newsstand'.

With a magcast you can deliver audio, written, or even video information directly to Apple devices. You can automatically distribute the latest issues of your magcast, send push notifications to the users devices, or include promo material inside of your magcast.

Image the kind of business you could generate through this value adding experience.

You can use 'newsstand' to build your list and make more recurring sales because Apple offers the option to integrate the consumers information with your email marketing service, and charge them a recurring or one-time fee. With newsstand you can also send customers push notifications.

With the guidelines to email marketing constantly changing push notifications are some of the most effective marketing mediums to take advantage of. If you have not searched magcasting yet you are leaving a lot of money on the table that your competitors will be scooping up in the near future.

See, magcasting is like Facebook back when it first started. It's gaining more and more transaction with a growing user base; however, as a publisher it is relatively unknown still.

Do not you think you could use a magcast to easily position yourself in your industry, grab a huge amount of market share, advertise to more targeted consumers, and do it all by publishing one piece of content a month?

I inherently believe that magcasting is the new email marketing, except much more effective because you are giving your customer what they really want. There's a good reason that large companies have been driving their consumers to magazine subscriptions since after the great depression. The reason is because it is an effective medium of marketing and a low-barrier to entry that almost anyone has access to.

In fact, there are over 600 million registered buyers already who might want to take advantage of your magcast.

I hope this post was insightful and has opened up your eyes to the newest positioning tool that will help grow your business.

Isn’t There an App For That?

A Review

When I'm not sure exactly where I want to go, I just Map Quest or Google Earth the location and I'm given step-by-step directions how to get there – go 0.3 mi and turn left on Happiness Street; at the next stoplight bear right as the road forks at Memory Lane; your destination is on the left. Pretty nifty, even if the directions are not always the most direct route.

When I run out of resources in my wallet I just log on to my bank's website and move some money around so I can survive until payday. When I do not know how to spell a word or when I need to find out where I can buy little umbrellas for drinks at my next patio party, I ask my loyal computer for a clue.

When I have a medical question or need to find out how physically healthy I am I send a quick e-mail to my doctor and she gets back to me within a couple of hours, even if it's 10 pm at night. When I crave a hit of spirituality I can receive an online injection by watching my minister speak a thousand of his weekly inspirational and spot on messages or by reading his informative and touching blog posts.

You may have heard me say most of the above before.

The New Stuff

So, why is it I can not do the same with the emotional side of my life? Real life and the work involved in it requires real participation, real touching, face-to-face interaction and solving problems in the presence of others. Is not there an app for that? It can be pretty difficult to celebrate all that life has to offer with a computer, even one with a talented program that simulates real-life events.

On the other hand, when I can not be there to see my girlfriend's new baby or when my great-nephew sprints ahead of the pack at his track meet, the computer and its attached pictures and social applications do indeed stand in. But I have still missed out on a part of the experience, a rather large part, in fact. I did not see the sweat of all his labor as he crossed the finish line, and I did not smell the red dirt track that was trampled by lots of other competitive teenager feet. And he also does not get to see me smiling and thumbs up his great work. The limits are obvious.

But, when I'm frustrated and need some insight into how I might improve the well- being of a couple of my relationships or certain things that have happened in those relationships, I look for a quick reference for an answer. I have to admit I've Googled “How to be a better friend” and “How to express disappointment without getting angry.” I also like to look up what my role models, such as Ernest Holmes or Emma Curtis Hopkins, may have to say about the spiritual side of my query. I've come to relly on my computer for so many things but solving real people problems / issues / questions can not be accompliously integrated with a connection to the internet.

I can not applaud my relationship with my computer enough when it comes to quickly learning what to do when my generous neighbor delivers a freshly molded and very much still alive and kicking Dungeness crab to my door (I put it in the freezer to put it to sleep but then needed to check online again to learn how to clean it after I cooked it.).

Access to almost all the information you've ever need in a flash is nice, but it's not the complete solution to what ails us / me. I wonder sometimes if I'm getting out of practice with real people-to-people interactions because of my use of computerized devices such as iPads, tablets, smart phones, etc. Admittedly, I've sometimes chosen those forms of communication over the face-to-face kind because I could edit what I say several times before spewing forth.

If I did not have my connection to all the information on the Internet, what would I do? I would not give up trying to improve my interpersonal relationships; I might flounder a bit more and make bigger mistakes. Hey, I make pretty big ones already! I might have to call someone who could advise me about how to handle a live crab. I would have to wait and call my doctor's office to get medical information, and I've got to put on my pantyhose (just a saying, people) and actually go to the Center for Spiritual Living in person, which would not be so bad.

There are those of my friends who, after having read this, will scoff, “See, I told you I could live my life just fine without learning how to work one of those computer things.” Okay, they do not really talk like that! But I have mixed feelings. While their lives are lived in the purest connection of people reaching out and connecting with other people, is not it limited limited by time, energy, money and availability?

Why Talk About This at All?

What has prompted this banal conversation in the first place you may wonder? Recently my computer experienced some significant problems. It had to do with the mouse and cursor having wild divergent ideas about where to go on the screen, neither of which was governed by my participation. It was cost and inconvenient. I became very involved in the life of my Dell tech from the Philippines, Raymund. During this period of downtime I was able to reflect about the difference between mechanical problems versus 'people' difficulties. Both have their good and bad points.

One of the best things to occur as a result of this computer problem was a dear friend recommend I read Patience, The Art of Peaceful Living by Allan Lokos. I highly recommend it. Hop on over to the movie and book review section of this blog for a more in-depth review. After having read it, I'm sure what I learned will help me with both computer problems and the foibles of living with and loving real live humans.

I'm no where near setting away my computer and all that it does for me, but I feel a stronger sense of being able to handle things without the aid of anything electronic.
